The Two Mile High Club, caretakers of the famous Cripple Creek Donkeys, invites everyone to the annual Donkey Release on Memorial Day, May 26, at Thurlow Avenue and C Street in Cripple Creek, Colorado. With assistance from the American Legion, a Memorial Day program will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by a reenactment-type speech from "Teddy Roosevelt"; much like he gave here in the early 1900's. In the original speech, President Roosevelt implored the mine owners to release their donkeys from the burdensome work in their gold mines. Eventually, the mine owners turned their donkeys loose in the city when more modern means of mining replaced their devoted furry workers, and local businessmen formed the Two Mile High Club to care for these beloved creatures. Through the years, the club has adopted other donkeys in their honor, providing daily care for more than 94 years. The annual Donkey Release takes place in honor of the original release of the donkeys from the mines in the 1930's. After "President Roosevelt's" speech comes the moment that everyone anticipates: the donkeys will step into the fields at the edge of Cripple Creek after being escorted from their winter pasture by the Two Mile High Club Donkey Wranglers. While the donkeys love attention and enjoy snacks, they are considered wild animals, so visitors should take appropriate precautions when approaching them. The Two Mile High Club encourages only the feeding of approved donkey biscuits, available for a small donation at business throughout the city and at the donkey release. Support for the "Healthy Herd Campaign" is essential to maintaining the health of this beloved herd of Cripple Creek Donkeys. The Elks Lodge will be on hand to sell hamburgers and hot dogs to the public. Personal picnic lunches are also encouraged and welcomed. Depending on the weather, be sure to bring sunscreen and layered clothing. Don't forget water bottles, an essential at an elevation of nearly 10,000 feet. Limited seating will be provided. Bring camping chairs if preferred. This good old-fashioned annual event kicks off an exciting summer season in the Gold Camps of Cripple Creek and Victor, Colorado.
